Project Management and Architecture of Telematics System
Automatic highway toll collection

Project Details
- Task : Management
- Completion : February 2020
Client
German provider of intelligent transportation solutions (ITS).
Challenge
Designing, implementing, and managing development (for 2 years) of a complex back-end platform for automatic road toll collection. The system had to process geolocation data (GPS) from thousands of vehicles in real-time, precisely map them to complex road tariffs (geofencing), and ensure reliable billing. A key challenge was coordinating an international, distributed development team (Poland, Ukraine, Germany).
Solution
For two years, I served as Technical Project Manager (TPM), responsible for the entire software lifecycle and system architecture. My responsibilities included:
Team Management: Leading an international team of several engineers and ensuring smooth communication between teams in 3 countries.
System Architecture: Oversight of the platform architecture that received and processed raw GPS data from onboard units (OBU).
Business Logic: Designing (or overseeing implementation) of core business logic, including geofencing algorithms for toll calculation.
Back-end Integration: Managing the database layer (storing processed data) and designing API interfaces for the client portal, which presented cost summaries and reports.
Result
The system was successfully implemented, enabling precise and automatic billing of trips for vehicle fleets. Experience gained in managing a complex telematics project and international team constitutes a key asset in leading complex, multi-year IoT “end-to-end” implementations.
